Working Through Discouragement - Getting Past the Frustration

I’ve been working at internet marketing solidly for a few months now and have not really made anything happen yet. My first instinct is to get discouraged and frustrated. But, I know that is not a productive emotion.

Instead, I am going to sit and think about why that can be, and work on changing the things that aren’t working and replace them with the things that are working. That is what I suggest you do, too. If you are wondering why things aren’t working out, tear yourself away from the computer and grab a pen and paper and brainstorm. Answer these questions:

  • What are you trying to accomplish?
  • How have you been trying to accomplish it?
  • How far have you gotten? Have you reached your goals? Why or why not?

Three simple questions - but if you spend enough time on it, you should have at least a page from your notebook filled up. Most importantly, you should have some insight into how you will succeed.

Do you want to see my answers? Here they are:

What am I trying to accomplish?

Make a full time income online ($400 a day) with internet marketing.

How have I been trying to accomplish it?

This week I’ve been using the following formula:

  1. Select a product to promote.
  2. Come up with some keywords that relate to the product.
  3. Start a blog with the main keyword and post it at using several of the other keywords on the list.
  4. For each keyword, start a squidoo lens, a hub on hubpages, and submit one article to ezinearticles. All of these are pointing to the blog.

And that’s it. It seems simple enough, but maybe there’s something missing.

This is the product I’ve been promoting: Ewan Chia’s Work from Home Special Report. It’s only $14.95 and filled with a lot of great information on how to do affiliate marketing, sell your own products, and make money on ebay.

Has it Been Working? Why or Why Not?

It has not been working. I think there are several problems with my approach:

  1. I chose a product in a highly saturated niche (internet marketing).
  2. I am using all the main keywords. This is not good in a saturated niche because my little, free blog doesn’t stand up all that well to the better known sites.
  3. I am not using any real methods for driving traffic to the blog, the lenses, or the hubs.

So fixing it seems rather obvious. Find good keywords. Start a blog in the niche that has its own personality. Drive traffic to the blog.

All of this work I am doing and documenting because I am creating an eCourse that I will be offering for free. But before I offer it, I need to test things out. I want to make sure that when I share the method with you, I can back it up and KNOW that it works.

  1. Kohuether,
It works a bit better to first find high ranking keyword that are not over saturated. Then find a product that fits the keywords.

  2. Great tips, Katherine. I love that you went ahead and shared the answers to your own questions. That’s awesome! Sharing honestly and letting people see you’re going through the very same thing they might be going through makes it easy to relate to what you’re saying. ;-)

Can’t wait to see how the eCourse turns out!

  3. @David - That’s what I was thinking - it’s a classic error, huh? I’d heard the same thing before but I went ahead and did it anyway… Live and learn!

@Michele - That’s pretty much the point of this blog I’ve realized - to document for others to see, my journey into internet marketing. So, I need to share the joys AND frustrations, right? :)

  4. Yeah, that’s why I talk about getting rejections, pulling stories, and how I sometimes get frustrated and impatient–so (aspiring) writers can see that other writers are going through the same thing as them. It’s encouraging to know you’re not the only one suffering. hehehe ;-)

  5. He he - It is encouraging to know these things, especially when you feel discouraged about something.

  6. It is! :-)

Hope you don’t mind I’ve tagged you for a meme. I think you’ll be able to come up with a great post for your readers using this theme.
