I started a new system this week. I realized that if I were really going to succeed online and as a writer, I needed to crack down on my time management skills.
So, I came up with a schedule that divides my time between internet marketing, writing for clients, writing things I care about, and writing and submitting to sites like Associated Content.
Depending on my schedule and my deadlines, I may add or subtract from that basic list from day to day but the goal is to spend at least 6 hours, ideally 8 hours, working on my business in some way.
I have a notebook by the computer, and a timer. I track my activities in 15 minute intervals. For example, my list today looks like this:
- Internet marketing - 2 hours
- Writing for clients - 2 hours
- Writing for me - 2 hours
- Associated Content - 2 hours
I have a list by the computer and each time I spend fifteen minutes on an activity (I set the timer) I put a check mark. In addition, I have a document on the computer where I list exactly what I did during those intervals.
I’ve had my most productive week ever.

Hi Katherine,
I need to learn to discipline myself and set down a definite time table in which to work. I like the method you have laid down, but I work full time day job that I totally hate and I wish I could quit today plus kids and caring for elderly parents. Anyway, I just wish could just break free of the job “prison” and devote all my quality time to writing, I know I could do it. So how do you do it, do you work full time as well? I’d like to know.
Regards, Cindy
