Using Google Notebook Instead of Little Scraps of Paper

Seriously, why didn’t I think of this before? My method of writing notes on pieces of scrap paper needed work. The paper creates clutter. I lose them, and then find them again several months later when the note isn’t important anymore.

As a by-product of working through the Thirty Day Challenge, I’ve realized that Google Notebook is incredible. All I need to do is click “Open Notebook” and type my note. And it’s always there. It doesn’t get lost. I can add and subtract information as I need.

And in one of the videos, Ed Dale demonstrated that you can be on a website and if you find an interesting tidbit to save somewhere, you can highlight it, right click, and select the option that has it automatically go to the bookmark. Awesome.

Now, I just need to go through all the leftover scraps and transfer my notes and start throwing things away.

  1. I like this, it’s quite true. However for me, I’d need those notes always-on-top or I’d forget I’d even written them. ;)

  2. Hi Lee,

Yes, I’ll need to start a routine of checking my notes at least once a day or else some important things will probably get ignored. And, that was the original problem with my “slips of paper” method. Thanks for stopping in! :)

  5. Totally agree on 2 points. Notebook is SO much more efficient for storing all those little notes. And you have to get into the habit of looking at (and organizing) the notes often or they get buried. Hey, all you programmers hear that? Make us an applet that lets us make a Google Notebook note into a post-it on our desktop. Much obliged! :)

  6. Right up there with Notebooks is the Yellow Sticky note “gadget” with my new Vista loaded laptop. It’s like the notes I use to tape on the side of my screen only better! To my amazement, its one of many things I totally love about Vista.

  7. what.. Theres a Google Notebook? where and how do i get one. shoot i need this service… Bad. Thanks for the info…. Seriously Didnt know about it.

  8. I haven’t really tried it but this alternative gets a lot of praise: http://evernote.com/

Also, for some stuff I like to take real notes on paper still. I know thats “retro” but I learn better that way. ;-) I have 2 notebooks full of notes just from the thirty day challenge and a Moleskine full of other marketing stuff. You can also read it away from the computer.

For market research I like to use Google Notebook because those snippets can easily be read, sorted and pasted onto a document and transformed into an article.

    Great post. :)

  9. I don’t know if I could give up scribbling little notes in my notebook. I’m really trying to be more “green”, but it’s so hard! ;-)

  10. @Twin2 - Thanks! I knew about it for at least a year before I started to use it… glad I finally started. :)

    @Tracey - I second that. I would LOVE a Google Notebook Post-it applet!

@KT Erwin - my laptop came Vista ready but I didn’t end up liking it. I wonder if I can find something like that for XP?

@Twin1 - your twin said you both knew about it! lol. Google also has GoogleDocs and a spreadsheet… haven’t started with them but it’s nice that I can have everything right when I log in if I happen to be on another computer.

@Oliver - yes, I started using Notebook after that lesson where Dale told us how to save those snippets. I started writing my to-do lists on it and became hooked. I’ll check out evernote. Thanks!

@Michele - it is a hard one to wean myself off of but once I started, I realized I liked it!
