Keeping Track of all those Business Ideas

It’s almost embarrassing how many ideas I have scribbled in random places. I have this notebook which is largely empty except for a few pages with ideas. I wrote this list almost a year ago, and I haven’t even really done any of these. I also have ideas scrawled on scrap paper, on my calendar, and probably several places I don’t even remember.

Since I’m not doing anything about it, it’s really just paper clutter. Besides, I need that notebook for something else.

But some of these ideas are good - or at least worth considering. So I clearly need a better way to keep track of them.

So, I started a file which I am leaving on the desktop for “ideas”. I have three categories on it so far: squidoo lenses, ebooks, and blogs. When I feel like I need to get inspired, or I’m just ready for my next project, I can visit that list knowing that something will be waiting for me.

There’s something about an ignored idea that’s a little unsettling…

  1. Glad to see I’m not the only one!!

  2. Ha ha - I wonder how successful I’d actually be if I implemented some of these ideas. ;) At least I have them organized now.

  3. I know what you mean! I’ve been trying hard to break myself of the excess paper habit. Trying to save trees, you know. ;-) One of my freelance writing/blogging friends told me I really should just save my writing - and ideas - online instead of printing it out or wasting paper/notebooks. She was right. I’m about 50-75% or more on my way there. It’s a good feeling.

  4. Michelle, I am definitely overwhelmed with paper. I don’t have a good system in place for keeping track of my business - getting control of those ideas is helping a little bit, but it’s just putting a bandage on the larger problem!

  5. Yeah, it probably stems from our inner childhood creativity. ;-) I don’t know about you, but I wasted huge trees - maybe even a forest! - with all my scribbles, art, poetry, and stories when I was a kid. Sorry, trees!

  6. Hi Michelle, yes, I wasted trees too but I tried to recycle. Old napkins, gum wrappers - had a boring job one summer and I’ve even saved some of those scribbles for nostalgia. :)
